Design inspiration only

Design the retreat around your real routine.

A good master suite begins with more than a large bedroom. Think about when you get up, how you get ready, what needs storing and whether one person needs to sleep while the other starts the day.

Write down the experience you want first: a quieter room, a more useful wardrobe, a private bathroom or somewhere to read. This gives your designer a better starting point than collecting unrelated images.

Give each part enough attention.

The bedroom

Consider the bed position, furniture, daylight, privacy and the view you would actually see from the room. A modest room with a thoughtful plan may serve you better than extra area with awkward circulation.

The wardrobe

Count what needs hanging, folding and storing. Talk through doors, mirrors and the route between the bedroom and bathroom.

The ensuite

List essentials separately from extras. Ask the professionals about the implications of the proposed plumbing position, waterproofing and services.

A balcony or sitting area

Be clear about whether you would use it and how it affects the overall scope. Views, privacy and any approval implications should be explored, not promised.

The floor below still matters.

Review the stairs and any changes to existing rooms. Talk about whether moving the main bedroom upstairs frees useful space below, and what work that new use requires.

Consider longer term accessibility and whether retaining a bedroom and bathroom downstairs would suit your household. These are design choices to discuss before finalising the plan.

Describe the result, not just the room count.

A useful brief might read: A quieter bedroom for two adults, an ensuite with good storage, a wardrobe for both people and minimal disruption to the existing living area.
